Biography

Andy Moses (b. 1962, Los Angeles) is a California-based artist. Attending the California Institute of the Arts in 1979, Moses was exposed to a plethora of creative methods, including performance, film, and painting, working alongside prolific artists such as Barbara Kruger and Michael Asher.

After graduating from CalArts in 1981, Moses moved to New York City, where he worked as an assistant to artist Pat Steir. During this time, Andy began developing an approach to process painting that incorporates both abstract and representational elements. Moses’ oeuvre is marked by abstract works and his investigation of colour and the physical properties of paint. In 2000, Andy moved back to Los Angeles and has since been inspired by the unique colours of the Southern California landscape, which profoundly influences his chromatic compositions.

Exploring his materials’ chemical reactions, viscosity interference, and gravity dispersion, Moses pushes the boundaries of how paint is used. We are invited to experience atmospheric effects reminiscent of the unyielding forces of nature in his elaborate compositions.

Dating back to his first group show in 1986, Andy went on to hold a solo show the following year at Annina Nosei Gallery. He has since been widely exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work is included in a multitude of institutional collections.
