Kojo Marfo: Beyond the Visible | JD Malat Gallery X Fynd
JD Malat Gallery, in collaboration with FYND, is pleased to present Beyond the Visible, a solo exhibition by Ghanaian-born, London-based artist Kojo Marfo (b. 1980). The exhibition begins with a simple proposition: no two people see the world in quite the same way. Through his imaginative compositions, Marfo invites viewers to look beyond immediate appearances and consider what might otherwise escape their attention.
Deeply rooted in his Ghanaian heritage, Marfo’s practice draws inspiration from traditional Akan sculptures and carvings encountered during his childhood. Marfo draws on these early influences in his paintings, bringing them into dialogue with his own experiences through a concept he calls AfroGenesis.
Marfo’s paintings are populated by enigmatic figures whose identities resist easy definition. Human and animal forms merge within vibrant compositions, their exaggerated features challenging our instinct to recognise and categorise. Each painting suggests a story without revealing it entirely, leaving space for viewers to arrive at their own interpretations.
At the heart of Beyond the Visible is the idea that meaning is shaped as much by the viewer as by the artist. By allowing different interpretations to coexist, Marfo encourages us to reconsider our assumptions and recognise that what we see is inevitably influenced by our own experiences.
