Horacio Quiroz

Biography
Horacio Quiroz is a contemporary artist based in Mexico City, known for his rich painterly depictions of the human body, unravelling a world of hybrid states and dynamic desires. Quiroz is self-taught and began embarking on his artistic journey in 2013, since then he has developed a body of work that aligns inherent oppositions, combining the beautiful with the grotesque, utopia with dystopia, and the familiar with the unknown.

Informed by queer and ecological theory, he employs themes of gender, the environment, the body and identity in his compositions, creating corporeal and topographical worlds that unearth the coarse narratives of contemporary life. Set in dream-like scene scapes, the portrayal of geomorphic structures and their etchings seem as though they are in constant motion, giving life to that which is stagnant in reality.

Quiroz's work is a coalescence of psychological manifestations and natural phenomena, portraying imitations of different materials that engage in the replication of the human figure, taking the art historical narrative of surrealism blended with his own comedic flare.

Quiroz's work is held in numerous collections including the Beth Rudin de Woody collection in Flordia, USA and Colección Mer in Segovia, Spain. He has exhibited in solo and group shows internationally including various European Countries, the USA, Australia, Mexico, China and Canada to name a few. Quiroz has also undertaken international artist residencies such as the PLOP residency in London during 2021.
