Biography

Conrad Jon Godly, (b. 1962, Switzerland) graduated from Basel's School of Art in 1986. From 1988 - 2004, Godly's photographic work found international success both in magazines and advertising. After briefly living in Vienna, Godly settled in Switzerland, where he currently lives and works.

Conrad Jon Godly’s paintings are instantly recognizable through his wide, sculptural brushstrokes and thick application of paint. His impasto surface textures capture the rugged and dramatic quality of the natural landscapes he frequently depicts. These pieces express a profound sense of the sublime as he explores man’s relationship with nature by evoking themes of beauty, awe and terror.

His latest series RENAISSANCE is a powerful meditation on nature’s capacity for restoration. Godly showcases a technical shift as he moves from his typical oil medium to acrylic to best create his richly impastoed compositions where abstraction and naturalism blur. Titled as a “rebirth” through renewal and healing, Godly’s series of majestic mountains are hopeful and energetic, embodying his profound journey of creative regeneration.

In 2025, Godly believes he is painting better than ever before. Godly has been honoured by the Ryosokuin-Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest zen temple, and spirituality permeates his works. He continues to mine the dramatic tension of the mountains as his subject matter with a sentiment of affirmation and stewardship, that 'we should take great care of ourselves and our nature.'
