Hone Intuition: Dubai

12 May - 9 June 2026
  • JD Malat Gallery is pleased to present Hone Intuition, a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Masayoshi Nojo. In this show, Nojo invites viewers into a space of attentiveness and stillness; one where perception sharpens, time slows, and meaning emerges through sustained observation.

    CONTEMPLATIVE APPROACH

Building on his ongoing exploration of memory, time, and perception, Hone Intuition shifts toward a more introspective and contemplative approach. The title itself poses a quiet question, suggesting the need to pause, clear the mind, and become fully immersed in observation.

  • INTUITION AS METHOD AND ATMOSPHERE

    INTUITION AS METHOD AND ATMOSPHERE

Nojo’s work merges contemporary image-making with traditional Japanese aesthetics, drawing from the legacy of Ogata Kōrin and the Rinpa school. His meticulous process, layering marbled acrylic surfaces, silkscreened imagery, and silver and aluminium leaf, produces works that shift subtly with light, movement, and time. In this body of work, intuition operates as both method and atmosphere. Each stage of the process demands precision and immediate concentration, resulting in compositions that carry a calm yet tense presence. Landscapes drawn from multiple locations and personal travels are transformed into images that evoke a shared sense of déjà vu.

  • SHIFTING IMAGE

    SHIFTING IMAGE

Here, memory is not fixed but fluid, what the artist describes as a “shifting image.” The works respond to their environment, allowing time to unfold within them. As a result, viewers are invited not only to reflect on past impressions, but to engage with the artwork in the present moment, experiencing its gradual transformation.

    Masayoshi Nojo (b. 1989, Japan)

Masayoshi Nojo completed his MA in Japanese Paintings in 2015 from the Kyoto University of Art and Design. With unique and complex techniques, he merges contemporary image-making with traditional Japanese aesthetics, drawing from the legacy of Ogata Kōrin and the Rinpa school. His meticulous process, layering marbled acrylic surfaces, silkscreened imagery, and silver and aluminium leaf, produces works that shift subtly with light, movement, and time. Deeply influenced by Japan’s rich landscapes and natural phenomena, Nojo’s work explores memory and the passage of time.
