Mayfair Times: Tim Kent's 'Histories in Flux' on view at JD Malat Gallery

Will Moffitt, Mayfair Times, May 8, 2024

Using architectural spaces as his muse, the New York-based painter Tim Kent turns traditional genres on their head, transforming Baroque and Georgian interiors into multilayered narratives about human history and self-implemented power structures. Titled Histories in Flux, Kent's latest show at JD Malat Gallery features 12 psychologically charged portraits, architectural depictions of estates and cultural institutions that highlight key issues pertaining to class, colonialism, access, privacy and consumption, which criticise and unearth hierarchical narratives. Through Kent's subtly crafted canvases, history and its symbolic representations become something more than the passing of time, as means of memorialisation and glorification are boldly called into question. Until June 1st 2024.
