Stephan Kaluza

Stephan Kaluza (b. Bad Iburg, Germany)  studied art and art history at the Peter Behrens School of Arts, the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and later at the Heinrich-Heine- Universität Düsseldorf University Düsseldorf.

Kaluza's practice, defined by a multidisciplinary background of painting, photography, and writing is characterized by large-format paitings, through which he explores the boundaries between photorealism and abstraction. Kaluza pushes limits to abstract interpretations, honing on his eternal subject in nature. Landscapes, forests, water bodies and other natural environments, are depicted in both hyper-realistic and abstract paintings, representing different states of the same motif, in a process of transformation;  from reality to perception, from perception to memory, from memory to abstraction. 

Since 1995, Kaluza has exhibited his work in various galleries, followed later by museum exhibitions, including the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Voorlinden Museum in The Hague, Portland Museum of Art, Zendai Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai, Ludwig Museum Koblenz and Oberhausen and the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf .
