Anila Ashraf
Anila Ashraf (b. 1978) is a Dubai-based ceramic artist and the founder of LaTakhaf Ceramics, where she has developed a practice centred on wheel throwing and experimental ceramic techniques. Since beginning her journey with clay in 2020, Anila has cultivated a distinctive artistic language that embraces the transformative qualities of the medium, using ceramics as a vehicle for exploration, resilience, and creative expression.
Working at the intersection of functional design and sculptural form, Anila reimagines traditional wheel-thrown vessels through processes of alteration and material experimentation. Enhanced with specialised glazes and tactile surfaces, her works blur the boundaries between utility and abstraction, inviting viewers to engage with them both as functional objects and contemporary sculptural forms.
Central to Anila's practice is an exploration of courage in the face of uncertainty. Her work reflects an intuitive and fearless approach to making, celebrating imperfection, transformation, and the unpredictable nature of the creative process. Through ongoing experimentation, she challenges conventional ceramic traditions while expanding the expressive possibilities of clay.
For Anila, art extends beyond medium to become a means of connection and dialogue. Rooted in the belief that creativity has the power to inspire change and foster understanding, her practice positions ceramics as a universal language that bridges personal experience and collective reflection, encouraging audiences to engage with the emotional and transformative potential of handmade objects.
